The morning sun breaks through our curtains and the realization settles on me that I slept through the night peacefully for the first time in months. James is sprawled out on his stomach with his face turned toward me and an arm slung around my hips. Pim is snoring adorably in the doorway, as her usual place.

The tiny village of cabins is quiet, and I assume everyone is still sleeping or not out of their homes yet. The air smells as sweet as lilacs and light as a bright spring morning. This is the type of weather that inspires me the most, usually. It hits me that painting is not an option for now as I have no tools or materials to do so.

I sit in one of the camping chairs Hunter created and lean back to bask in the rising sun.

“You’re up early,” Snow’s dour voice startles me from behind.

She walks silently across from her front door and delicately sits across from me.

“This is one of my favorite times of day,” I answer.

Amusement crosses her eyes and I get a rare glimpse at a smile in the short time I have known her. She has striking purple eyes that remind me of Liz Taylor.

“Is that funny?” I wonder.

She gives a small shoulder shrug. “Not really, just that the Kennedy I knew preferred sleeping in and being nocturnal,” she provides.

I chew on this. In my adolescence I did not sleep at night because of an intense fear of the dark. Once I realized that being awake during nighttime was worse than sleeping, I changed my patterns to avoid darkness at all costs.

“I’m not a fan,” I look to Helia’s cabin when I hear rustling inside. “Well, I wasn’t anyway, now I am more or less indifferent.”

Snow nods, glancing toward Helia’s cabin as well. “You’ve overcome your night phobia then?”

Goosebumps rise on my arms at her acknowledgement of the thoughts that were just running through my head. Can she read my mind, or did my previous self-have the same fears? Before I can ask for clarification, Pim bounds out of my cabin and catches our attention.

“I’m surprised you got out without her noticing,” Snow says while scratching her chin.

Now it is my turn to shrug, “that’s pretty normal actually. She sleeps like the dead.”

She tilts her head at me quizzically but says nothing.

“Well good morn ladies!” Hunter bursts out from inside his cabin, shocking me to the core. “What are you doing on this fine day?”

I am not sure what to say to him yet, he is so vibrant and full of life that I find myself tongue tied when he joins a conversation.

“Just enjoying the sunshine. Or we were,” she gives him a pointed look, “until you rudely interrupted our peaceful chat.”

He slings himself into a chain directly next to mine and slaps my thigh excitedly. I jerk and subtly attempt to settle my leg out of his grasp.

“I think you overwhelm her,” Snow sighs. “Why must you thrust yourself
